Meteora to Athens by bus
There is one direct coach and it is easy to miss: the KTEL Grevenon (KTEL Grevena) Grevena to Athens service picks up at Kalampaka and runs through to Kifissos, Terminal A. It does not run every day. On the other days it is two buses, the local to Trikala and then the KTEL Trikalon (KTEL Trikala) coach to Liosion, Terminal B, which is about five and a half hours in all. Both are below with their live timetables.
Planning the day back to Athens
If you have spent the morning at the monasteries, there is no need to rush. The local bus from Kalampaka to Trikala takes about 25 minutes, and coaches leave Trikala for Athens through the afternoon, the last at 19:00. Allow at least half an hour at Trikala between the two buses, and buy the Athens ticket there or on the operator's website before you travel.
The coach arrives at Liosion, Terminal B, in Kato Patisia, not at Kifissos. It is a short walk to the metro at Agios Nikolaos for the centre. If you are flying out of Athens the same evening, the 15:30 from Trikala is the latest that leaves a comfortable margin; the 19:00 arrives after 23:00.
